Job Opening: Parish Organist
Position Purpose
The Parish Organist is a vital part of a collaborative worship ministry staff. The staff consists of the clergy, a Musical Director for the 8:50 a.m. worship service, a Parish Pianist, and a Music Director for the 10:50 a.m. worship service.
Position Summary
The Parish Organist, while primarily responsible for providing service music for the 10:50 worship service music in coordination with the clergy and staff, he/she also accompanies the adult choir, plays special music as requested, and oversees the maintenance of the pianos and organ in the church.
General Duties
- Play the organ for the 10:50 a.m. worship services on Sunday morning, including preludes, postludes, hymns, responses, occasional interludes, choral accompaniments and incidental music
- Plan weekly preludes, postludes, special music, and congregational hymns as needed for the liturgical year and and send as requested to the ministerial staff for bulletin purposes
- Accompany the 10:50 Adult Choir under the Music Director’s leadership and practice with them each week
- Play the organ and/or piano at special rehearsals with adequate prior notice by the Music Directors or ministerial staff, in support of usual or special worship events
- Prepare special music and major holidays.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, with Organ as the major instrument
- Minimum of 4-6 years’ experience playing in a church worship setting (some if not all in the Anglican/Episcopal tradition, but not necessary)
- Understanding and complying with Safeguarding God’s Children
- Successful completion of a Background Check
- Ability to communicate clearly and pleasantly
- Self-motivated, creative and outstanding attention to detail
